French Made will be celebrating the 5th Macaron Day in Vancouver on March 20 and you are all invited to share the love of macarons and support BC Children’s Hospital Foundation!

“Le Jour du Macaron” started in Paris in 2005, invented by famous Chef Pierre Hermé and French Made initiated the tradition in Vancouver in 2012. This year we will be celebrating le Jour du Macaron at our Mount Pleasant café (81 Kingsway) and at the Atelier kitchen in South Vancouver.

At the café, a donation jar will be available and each customer will receive a free mini macaron and a percentage of all the sales of macarons will be donated to the Foundation. There will be 17 to 18 flavours of macarons and also large macarons (3”) in different flavours.

We are also very happy to announce the launch of a new kind of macaron: an eggless vegan-friendly version of French Macarons that even non-vegans will enjoy! For the moment, one flavour is available: dark chocolate with Nuez date-almond milk and coconut milk. We are working on developing a couple of other flavours for later in the spring. For now vegan macarons are available frozen every day at the café (wait 10-15 minutes to enjoy them) and we will have some fresh ones on Macaron Day.

At the Atelier, Chef David will be teaching all the secrets to make perfect macarons on March 19 and 20. The 2.5 hours hands-on class is limited to 7 students each day and everyone will walk home with a macaron-making kit and the macarons made during the class (about 24 macarons per student).

The cost is $110 tax included and 25% will also be donated to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Registration limited to 7 students each day, first come first served, please reserve your spot by phone (604-558-4880) or email, partial proceeds donated to BC Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Galette des Rois (Kings’ Cake) & Hot Chocolate Festival

Happy New Year everyone! January is the best month if you have a sweet tooth as two exciting events are happening!

Galette des Rois / Kings’ Cake

In France, a very important tradition to quickly let go of your New Year resolution to start a diet and to overcome back-to-work gloom is to indulge in la Galette des rois.

galette des rois 2 sizes

Made of two discs of flaky buttery puff pastry filled with frangipane almond cream, it is sinfully good and since it’s a seasonal cake, you have to fill up during the month of January!

The Galette des Rois is a celebration cake made to share with friends, family and colleagues. The tradition is part of the French Catholic background:  on January 6th, people were celebrating Epiphany (the 12th day after Christmas, when the three Kings brought gifts to the newborn Jesus, hence the name Kings’ Cake) with a cake. Inside the Galette is hidden a little object (originally a fava bean, hence the name “fève” in French, then it became a ceramic or plastic figurine) and whoever finds it becomes the “King” or “Queen” for the day and gets a paper crown to show it. Tradition has it too that the King or Queen throws another party and offers a galette to the unlucky guests.

To make sure nobody cheats (it sometimes happens that you cut on it and you know where it is), somebody cuts the galette while the youngest guest has to go under the table and is in charge of randomly distributing the slices amongst the guests.
When sharing a galette between grown ups, it is commonly agreed that whoever gets the fève will buy the next galette to share.

We have 3 sizes available until the end of January:
By the slice: $4.25 (may come with a fève, be careful when biting!)
3-4 servings (6″, please pre-order at least 48 hours in advance): $16.45
6-8 servings (9″, please pre-order at least 24 hours in advance): $32.50
(as usual, prices include tax)
All full galettes will come with a fève and a paper crown.
Orders may be placed by email or in person.

Food intolerances: all drinks do not contain gluten (but they are made in a kitchen where we handle wheat flour). Our kitchen is peanut-free but supplies like chocolate may have been exposed to cross-contamination risks at the manufacturer’s facility. Unless the drink recipe is made with non-dairy milks we are sorry but we won’t be able to offer a dairy free version of the drink. Our regular hot chocolate can be made dairy free though.
